Sutlej Yamuna Dispute: The second round of talks between Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar on the Sutlej Yamuna Link Canal (SYL) will take place today in Delhi. Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat has invited both state ministers to this meeting.
Meeting to be led by Union Minister Gajendra Shekhawat
The meeting will take place at three o’clock in the afternoon in the Union Water Power Minister’s office in Delhi, led by Union Minister Gajendra Shekhawat. It is significant that, on the order of the Supreme Court, a meeting was held in Chandigarh on October 14 to resolve the water issue. The next hearing in this case in the Supreme Court is scheduled for January 19, at which time the central government is required to submit a four-month progress report.

First meeting was inconclusive
The 2-hour meeting between the Chief Ministers of Punjab and Haryana on SYL on October 14, 2022, was inconclusive. Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal had requested that a timetable for the construction of the SYL be established, citing a Supreme Court order. Both Chief Ministers stated that the meeting was ineffective.
According to reports, Irrigation Department Principal Secretary Krishna Kumar has spent the last three days preparing for the meeting. He is said to have shared with Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann all of the issues that will be discussed at today’s meeting.
