Punjab: School Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains on Saturday wrote to the Chief Secretary, asking him to not assign any non-educational work to teachers. He said that the teachers should be spared free time to focus on student’s future. The letter comes after Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s pledge to refrain from deputising government teachers for tasks that are not instructional.

State devoted to quality education
The minister, in his letter, said the government schools of the state are devoted to provide quality education to the students. Hence, teachers’ primary concern is to be focus in school and no extra work should be assigned to them other than that of school projects.
Committee to review whether teachers should be deputed for additional work
The school education minister also asked the committee consisting of Chief Electoral Officer Punjab, rincipal Secretary (School Education) and Principal Secretary (Governance Reforms) to review whether children should be asked to do extra work other than teaching. After discussions with stakeholders, the committee is advised to submit the report in three months.
“It will be a historic decision if we decide not to depute teachers for non-educational work, which would greatly benefit not only the teachers and students, but the entire school education system of the state,” said the minister.
