Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, and three of his associates’ residences were the targets of simultaneous raids by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Friday. Recently, Ghosh was detained by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for suspected financial violations.
The ED’s probe into wrongdoing at the government-run hospital is still ongoing. In addition to further searches in Howrah and Subhasgram, the raids took place at Ghosh’s residence in Beliaghata. Ghosh is one of the four accused who is presently being held by the CBI.
ED Files Money Laundering Case Under PMLA
Officials said that the Enforcement Department (ED) has filed an Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR), which is comparable to a First Information Report (FIR) in a criminal case, against Sandip Ghosh. The investigation into money laundering connected to financial misbehaviour at the institution is being conducted under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
CBI Takes Over Probe After Court Order
The probe was transferred from a state-constituted Special probe Team (SIT) to the CBI, as per the directives issued by the Calcutta High Court on August 23. Dr. Akhtar Ali, the hospital’s former deputy superintendent, filed a petition alleging serious financial violations during Ghosh’s tenure, and this decision was made in response.
Alleged Corruption Tied to Suspicious Death Case
Ghosh, who served as principal from February 2021 to September 2023, is also connected to the suspicious death of a 31-year-old female doctor. The doctor was found dead in the hospital’s seminar hall, and concerns have been raised that her knowledge of the corruption could have led to her death. Ghosh, though not charged with her murder, faces corruption charges, with a case already registered under the PMLA.
Currently, one arrest has been made in connection with the doctor’s rape and murder, involving a police volunteer, Sanjay Roy. Ghosh has undergone polygraph tests related to the case but remains in custody due to the non-bailable corruption charges.
