Azam Khan : On Wednesday, an official announced that Abdullah Azam Khan, a member of the Samajwadi Party and an MLA in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly, was disqualified from his position. The disqualification came shortly after a court sentenced him to two years in prison for a 15-year-old case. Khan, who is the son of senior Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan, represented Suar in Rampur district in the Assembly.
Reason for disqualification
According to the official, Khan’s disqualification was a result of the Moradabad court order, which sentenced him to two years in jail. The order was issued in connection with a case in which Khan and his father were charged with criminal force to deter public servants from the discharge of their duty. This charge was brought against them after a dharna on a state highway in 2008, during which their convoy was stopped by police for checking. The incident occurred in the wake of an attack on a CRPF camp in Rampur on December 31, 2007.
Future of Khan’s political career
This is not the first time that Khan has been disqualified. In 2020, his election to the Assembly was set aside by the Allahabad High Court, and he was disqualified at that time as well. The previous disqualification was effective from December 16, 2019. The latest disqualification comes as a further blow to Khan’s political career, and it remains to be seen what his next steps will be.
