Uttar Pradesh News: The government of Uttar Pradesh has approved construction of 2 ultra-critical thermal power plants in Sonbhadra’s Obra to provide cheaper electricity to people of the state. The project will cost around Rs 18,000 crore with each of the ‘Obra D’ power plants having a capacity of 800 MW. The construction of plants will take around a period of four to five years and will be spread over an area of 500 acres.
The decision to construct the plants was approved by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath during a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday. Urban Development and Energy Minister A K Sharma said “During the Global Investors Summit, we had signed an agreement with NTPC to set up a thermal plant at Obra. Today, the project has been approved by the Council of Ministers. This plant will be built on about 500 acres of land and if further land is needed, arrangements will be made for that too.”
Obra Power Plants
Currently, Obras has six installed power plants than generate 1100 MW of power. The ‘Obra D’ thermal power plant will have state-of the art technology that will be cost efficient as it will utilize lesser coal to generate more power. The project will help down in bringing down the prices of electricity in the state. The first unit is projected to have its completion within 50 months. As of now UP has a thermal power capacity of 7000 MW and the two plants will substantially add to power generation in state.
The project will be executed with 50:50 partnership between State and Central government-owned power generator NTPC. The 70% of projects cost will be raised through financial institutions and rest 30% will be raised through equity.
‘Energy hub of the country’
Urban Development and Energy Minister A K Sharma said that the State government has been aiming to project Sonbhadra as a energy hub of the country. He further added that completion of these projects would prove the point.
He also mentioned how these projects would ,lower the price of electricity “At present, we buy electricity at Rs 5.50 per unit, while from this plant we will be able to buy electricity at Rs.4.79 per unit. That is, we will be able to provide cheap electricity to consumers at Re 1 per unit.”
He had also said that he hoped that the plant becomes an energy hub not only of the state, but of the entire country.
