The government of Uttar Pradesh has put up a ban on use of plastic and thermocol during the course of Kanwar Yatra scheduled between July 14-26 this year. The Kanwar yatra takes place annually during the Hindu holy month of Shrawan. Principal Secretary of urban development Amrit Abhijat said “The Kanwar Yatra will be kept completely plastic free. Along with single use plastic items, the use of thermocol will also be banned. Cleanliness drives should be launched and arrangement of drinking water should be made on the route.” Additionally medical teams will be put in place with facilities of drinking water, street lights, security cameras, CCTVs, drone surveillance also being arranged for.
Important restrcitions put in place
The administration of Uttar Pradesh has geared up preparations to ensure peaceful conduct of yatra this year. Principal secretary (home) Sanjay Prasad and DGP Vijaya Kumar are visiting various districts to oversee security and other arrangements for the yatra. According to the guidelines issued, the devotes will not be permitted to carry spears and tridents above 12 feet. There will be no movements of vehicles on Yatra route and restriction on obscene songs played by DJs has also been placed.

Vigil to monitor anti-social elements
For smooth conduct of Yatra this year, inter-state coordination with police and administration of Uttarakhand, Delhi, Haryana and Rajasthan is also being set up. Special arrangements are being made to provide women kanwariyas with better facilities with particular focus on toiletsand safety. Police is closely monitoring WhatsApp and other social media platforms to prevent spread of fake news and rumors which could escalate communal tensions. Principal Secretary Sabnay Prasad stated “The inter-state and inter-district information system should be strengthened so that the information about any incident is immediately shared with neighboring states or the districts.”
