Uttarakhand News

Uttarakhand News: On the day of Diwali, in Uttarakhand, another agonising catastrophe occurred in Uttarkashi, following Chamoli. There have been reports of the Yamunotri National Highway tunnel under construction breaking. The National Highway tunnel that Navyuga Company is building from Silkyara to Dandalgaon has collapsed.

Tunnel Breaks During Construction

About twenty to twenty-five workers are stuck within the tunnel because it broke while it was being built. There are reports that debris had moved 200 metres closer to Silkyara. Every worker inside it is confined at a distance of eight hundred metres. Oxygen is being supplied to the trapped workers inside the tunnel via oxygen pipes. No casualties have been recorded as of yet. Relief and rescue crews from the district headquarters were dispatched to the accident scene as soon as word of the disaster reached them. Rescue and relief efforts are ongoing.

Chamoli’s 2021 Tragedy Echoes in Uttarkashi

In 2021, labourers in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district were similarly stranded in a tunnel. There was a worker trap in the Tapovan tunnel. The district government tried for several days to remove the debris from the tunnel using JCB and dumpers, but they were unable. In an effort to free the individuals stranded in the tunnel, a new machine was used to drill. For several days, the district administration worked on relief and rescue efforts. 53 workers sadly perished as a result of getting stuck in the tunnel.
