Uttarakhand rains: Some parts of Uttarakhand are currently witnessing heavy to very heavy rainfall, leading to cloudbursts and road blockage. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for all districts in the mountain state and forecasted heavy rainfall in several regions of Garhwal and Kumaun. The Met Dept has also issued a warning against the closure of roads in sensitive areas due to landslides triggered by waterfalls.
Cloudburst in Uttarkashi
Uttarakhand witnessed massive destruction due to a cloudburst in the Thalisain region of Pauri and Uttarkashi’s Purola. As many as 50 buildings were found to be damaged in the Purola, Barkot and Dunda districts of Uttarkashi, disrupting the electricity supply in 40 villages and resulting in the closure of 50 Rodas. The heavy rainfall has caused more than 400 agricultural land drains to be washed away, adding to the misery of locals.
“Due to heavy rain, 50 buildings have been damaged in Purola, Barkot and Dunda of Uttarkashi district. 50 roads are closed in the district. Electricity supply has stopped in about 40 villages and more than 400 drains of agricultural land have been washed away,” said Uttarkashi DM Rohila.
Passengers should postpone Gangotri-Yamunotri Yatra
Aarkot-Himachal Pradesh road was blocked due to a heavy landslide net Arakot market following incessant rain in the region. Arpan Yaduvanshi, SP Uttarkashi, has requested devotees to postpone their Gangotri-Yamunotri Yatra in view of the ongoing monsoon season.
IMD issues Orange alert
The Met Dept has issued an orange alert for Uttarakhand after incidents of cloudburst have come to the fore in many regions. Some areas have become more prone to cloud bursts in Uttarakhand, triggering landslides and road blockage.
