Senior Congress politician and chairman of the Congress Disciplinary Committee Navprabhat stated on Thursday that the party would welcome the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) if it promoted “social harmony” amid the current effort by the Uttarakhand administration to adopt it in the state.
“It is noteworthy that the Uttarakhand government has constituted a committee under the chairmanship of retired Supreme Court Justice Ranjana Desai to implement UCC in the state, which is going to submit its report on UCC to the state government by June 30,” said Navprabhat.
Navprabhat went on to say that Congress will support UCC if it helps to foster social unity and lessen public suspicion.
Additionally, Navprabhat gave several historical instances where the Portuguese attempted to apply the UCC when they established colonies in Goa, Daman, and Diu before to Independence.
“Before independence, in 1869, Goa talked about Uniform Civil Code but it accepted different religions, practices and beliefs…The Goan Code talks about promoting social harmony. If any effort is made to promote social harmony, remove the mistrust that has arisen among the people, the Congress will welcome it,” said Navprabhat.
Navprabhat also add, “Our beliefs are similar to constitutional believes, but whenever we will get governments memoranda, that time we decide what will be acceptable to us and what not”.
It is interesting that the Uttarakhand government established a committee to implement UCC in the state, which would present its report on UCC to the state government by June 30. The group will be chaired by retired Supreme Court Justice Ranjana Desai.
One of the main pledges made by the BJP during the most recent assembly elections in the hill state was the introduction of a uniform civil code. Days after taking office, CM Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami established the UCC’s five-person committee.
