Dehradun News: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has issued instructions to the Dehradun Municipal Corporation (DMC) to provide a comprehensive update on the progress of improvements at the waste management plant in the ongoing Sheeshambara trenching ground case. This move comes in response to complaints from locals about perceived inaction, which raised concerns of non-compliance with court orders.
Background: Court’s Call for Action Stemmed from 2022 Petition
The issue surrounding the Sheeshambara trenching ground first caught the attention of the NGT in 2022 through a petition filed by Raj Gangsari, the secretary of Pachhvadoon Sanyukt Samiti. The petition highlighted local opposition to the trenching ground’s location, citing its proximity to residential areas and the adverse impact on the ecology of the Asan river flood plains.
In October 2023, the court had requested a plan from the corporation following complaints from the locals, and the recent directive seeks accountability in the face of perceived inaction.
Locals Allege Ecological Damage and Untreated Waste
Gangsari stated, “The committee’s findings contradicted the corporation’s claims, providing evidence of ecological damage and untreated waste. The court now seeks concrete answers to address these concerns.”
During the monsoon season, residents raised alarms about waterlogging and pollution in the Asan river and groundwater, prompting the court to instruct the DMC to submit a detailed report on actions taken in the last six months and a plan for managing daily waste and legacy waste.
Municipal Commissioner’s Response: Affidavit Due in Four Weeks
In response to the NGT’s directive, Municipal Commissioner Gaurav Kumar stated, “We have four weeks to submit an affidavit detailing the measures taken to enhance the functioning of the waste management plant.” This timeframe underscores the urgency of the situation and emphasizes the need for prompt and effective actions to address the waste management concerns raised by the local community.
