The Union government has approved an outlay of ₹3,295 crore for developing 40 tourist destinations across 23 states under the Special Assistance to States/UTs for Capital Investment (SASCI) scheme. Uttarakhand's Rishikesh, renowned as a yoga and tourism hub, will benefit from the scheme through the development of a state-of-the-art rafting base station worth ₹100 crore.
Addressing Gaps in Rafting Infrastructure
Rishikesh's current rafting infrastructure is inadequate, posing challenges for both tourists and locals. Issues such as the lack of toilets, changing rooms, safety provisions, and traffic congestion along the Rishikesh-Tapovan-Shivpuri corridor hinder the overall rafting experience.
Rafting Base Station Project Highlights
The project aims to centralise rafting operations at the ISBT, introduce a standardised booking system, and provide modern amenities to elevate the tourist experience. Key features of the project include:
- Construction of a centralised rafting base station with toilets, changing rooms, and roadside food outlets.
- Development of alternative routes to reduce traffic congestion in the Tapovan area.
- Implementation of an ITC-based monitoring system for enhanced safety and efficiency.
Boosting Tourism and Economic Growth
The new infrastructure is expected to attract high-paying tourists, improve safety, and promote economic growth in the region, further cementing Rishikesh’s reputation as a global adventure tourism destination.
