UCC Draft ready: Uniform Civil Code will be implemented soon

Uniform Civil Code Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami had also said in his election speeches that Uniform Civil Code would be implemented here after the formation of the BJP government in the state. After coming to power, he took steps in this direction. The Dhami government had constituted a five-member expert committee headed by Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai (Senior) to draft the Uniform Civil Code.

The BJP has promised to implement the Uniform Civil Code in its 2019 election manifesto. It is being said that BJP is in favor of implementing UCC in the state due to change in culture, environment and demography of Uttarakhand. State CM Pushkar Singh Dhami has said that such a step is being taken to preserve the original form of the state. That’s why it is absolutely unfair to consider it against any particular religion.

PM Modi has raised the political temperature by discussing about this in the address of his workers in MP. Opposition parties are accusing the BJP of playing the politics of polarization. At the same time, PM Modi has indicated the condition and direction of future politics by explaining the meaning of having two laws in one country. Therefore, after being implemented in Uttarakhand, it is expected to be implemented across the country as well. It is being said that if successful in implementing Dhami in Uttarakhand, then Dhami will emerge as a big leader at the national level and he will get credit for it at the country level.

Why is the Dhami government serious about the need for UCC?

Actually, the Dhami government is serious about the change in the present form of Uttarakhand. The government thinks that in order to preserve the culture of the state, a law should be made for the people of the state. Obviously, there has been a demand to enact a law for the citizens living in the state regarding distribution of property including marriage, divorce, succession, inheritance and gender equality. It is being said that after UCC, the age of marriage of girls will be increased, while apart from ban on polygamy, information about live-in relationship will be given to the parents. Without registration of marriage, the benefit of any government facility will not be given to the couple. It is obvious that after the implementation of UCC in Uttarakhand, Uttarakhand will become the first state in the country where the laws will be same for all the citizens.

Which countries have implemented Uniform Civil Code?

Uniform Civil Code is applicable in many countries. After being implemented in Uttarakhand, there is a possibility of being implemented all over India. Countries like America, Ireland, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Turkey, Indonesia, Sudan, Egypt, to name a few, exist among countries in the world where laws under the UCC are the same for all citizens. Different personal laws for different religions in the country have been increasing the pending cases of the courts of the country. The Supreme Court has also been commenting on the implementation of UCC from time to time. That’s why BJP has been loudly talking about the mention of UCC in the constitution prepared by Babasaheb Ambedkar.
