The marriageable age of girls in Uttarakhand is likely to be increased while a comprehensive study is being conducted to ban practices like ‘Halala’ and ‘Iddat.’ These matters are being given serious consideration by the expert committee responsible for drafting the Uniform Civil Code of the state.
Within the next two weeks, the committee will present the final draft report to the government. Shatrughan Singh, a senior member of the Uniform Civil Code draft committee and a former IAS officer, mentioned that the committee has received suggestions regarding compensation for the parents of a deceased son who was in service. The suggestions propose that even if the wife remarries, she should still be entitled to a portion of the compensation received in the event of her husband’s death. It is also suggested that the husband should be responsible for supporting the parents of his deceased wife if she passes away.
Singh stated that the committee is considering these suggestions along with other relevant aspects
However, Mohammad Ahmad Qasmi, known as ‘Shehr Qazi,’ strongly objected to these suggestions, asserting that nobody has the right to interfere with the Quran Sharif or practices like ‘Iddat’ and ‘Halala.’ He emphasized that the purpose of observing the “Iddat” period is to determine pregnancy and ensure certainty of paternity, and neither the Government of Uttarakhand, the Central Government, nor any authority has the right to interfere in such sensitive decisions related to Shariah.
In contrast, Ravinder Kumar, the spokesperson for the BJP, stated that controversial practices like Halala have no acceptance in many Muslim countries, and their abolition would be in the best interest of society.
