Uttarakhand: Ban on construction activities in Joshimath

After land subsidence in Joshimath, cracks in the walls of houses and water gushing out from many places, now the administration is also looking more worried. Amidst the demands of the local people for many days, Chamoli administration has finally put a stop to all the construction works of NTPC.

Chamoli DM has issued an order saying that all the construction works for the power project will be stopped till further orders. In a statement issued by the DM, it has been said that at present the ground is sinking in the Joshimath Municipal Council area and in view of the security in this situation, the construction works should be stopped immediately.

Along with this, many other decisions have been taken. It has been said that about two thousand pre-fabricated huts should be made at safe places in Joshimath for the affected families of NTPC.

On the other hand, the Joshimath Bachao Sangharsh Samiti has said that if the affected people are not displaced from here in time, there will be loss of public money on a large scale. The Sangharsh Samiti has demanded from the state government that the people should be displaced soon. The people of the area are continuously agitating for the demand of rehabilitation. The challenges have increased for them in this cold season. People have also taken out a candle march to convey their voice to the government.

The people of Joshimath have been continuously complaining about cracks in their houses since November last year and now the situation is such that water has started coming out from the houses where cracks have come. Two hotels have been closed as a precaution.

Government has conducted a survey

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami says that every possible effort is being made to save Joshimath. The Chief Minister told news agency ANI that the government has conducted a survey in this matter and based on the report of the survey, the government is working further. He told that along with the Disaster Management Department, the district administration has been put on alert and the state government will take all other actions ranging from displacement.

Joshimath is also the gateway to reach Badrinath, Auli and Valley of Flowers and due to this there is a large number of people coming and going here and there is public pressure. Locals say that continuous construction activities and erosion of rivers have made the situation worse. Chamoli district also shares border with neighboring country China.

The report of the Mishra Committee, prepared by the Uttar Pradesh government in the year 1976 regarding Joshimath, has also mentioned about the sinking of this city. Local people say that since the 1976 report, the governments have not taken any action till date.
