In a proactive move to address the declining population of migratory birds in Uttarakhand, the Uttarakhand Biodiversity Board has launched the ‘e-bird application.’ This digital tool aims to monitor the migratory bird population in reservoirs and six forest divisions, including two tiger reserves, within the state.
Census of Bird Species in Terai Region
As part of the conservation strategy, the board is set to conduct a comprehensive census of bird species in the Terai region starting January 20. The Terai region is particularly significant for avian biodiversity, and this initiative is crucial for understanding and conserving the diverse bird population.
Utilization of e-Bird App for Precision
The e-bird app will be employed for the first time in the Terai forest central division. This technology allows for precise monitoring of bird species, contributing to accurate data collection. The application is expected to enhance the efficiency of the bird population monitoring process.
Addressing Human Interference Challenges
The declining influx of birds in Uttarakhand is attributed to human interference, impacting the selection of water bodies by migratory birds. The census is strategically designed to provide critical data for conservation efforts and address the challenges faced by avian species.
Online Training and Certificates for Bird Watchers
To ensure a comprehensive and informed census, the initiative includes online training for bird watchers, equipping them with the necessary knowledge. Certificates will be provided to participants, further enhancing the credibility of the bird population monitoring process.
Anticipated Impact on Conservation Efforts
The census, conducted with the support of the e-bird app, is anticipated to surpass previous counts and offer valuable insights into the migratory bird population in Uttarakhand. This data will play a crucial role in conservation initiatives and wildlife management.
This innovative approach aligns with the commitment to preserving biodiversity and safeguarding the habitats of migratory birds in the region.
