Uttarakhand High Court to relocate
In his letter, Rijiju mentioned, “Once required infrastructure is made available by the state governmental Haldwani, the centre would start the process to issue a notification for shifting of the high court from Nainital.” The state cabinet had previously approved the relocation of the high court from Nainital to Haldwani on November 16th of last year. The government’s justification for this decision was that it would be more convenient for the average litigant and petitioner, who would otherwise have to travel to the hill town of Nainital, which is only accessible by road.
Furthermore, since Nainital is a popular tourist destination, the cost of accommodations and other expenses were a significant burden for people visiting the high court. On the other hand, Haldwani, which is situated in the plains and accessible by rail, offers a wider range of lodging options. These factors were taken into account when considering the relocation of the high court.
Lawyers oppose relocation
Following the state cabinet’s approval, government teams studied the technical and practical considerations involved in moving the high court, and subsequently submitted a proposal to the central government for clearance.
It’s important to note that some lawyers have strongly opposed the proposed relocation and even burned effigies of the government when the cabinet first approved the move in November. They have called it an “anti-hills” decision that would severely harm Nainital’s local economy. These lawyers have also threatened to increase their protests if the government moves forward with the relocation.
