Uttarakhand News: The Uttarakhand Forest Department’s research wing, with the efforts of experts, has successfully revived a ‘critically endangered’ plant, Gentiana Kurroo, also known as Himalayan Gentian or Trayman. This unique and revered medicinal herb, native to the Western Himalayas, has been on the brink of extinction.
‘Critically Endangered’ Himalayan Gentian Rescued from Extinction by Uttarakhand Forest Department
Himalayan Gentian has a rich history in traditional medicine and holds promising prospects in modern healthcare, as it is known for its potential in treating various ailments, including liver disorders, digestive problems, diabetes, bronchial asthma, and urinary infections. Notably, it is distinguished by its vibrant, trumpet-shaped blue flowers, which are relatively uncommon among angiosperms.
The plant’s root, in particular, is highly regarded for its therapeutic properties, particularly in the treatment of liver ailments. However, overexploitation had pushed it to the brink of extinction. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has classified Himalayan Gentian as ‘critically endangered,’ and it is among the 16 plant species listed as ‘threatened species’ by the Uttarakhand Biodiversity Board in the state.
This successful rescue effort by the Uttarakhand Forest Department underscores the importance of preserving and protecting endangered plant species with ecological and medicinal significance.
