Uttarakhand News: ‘Red Alert’ issued as Nainital-Almora highway is closed for traffic

A 'Red ALert' has been issued for many regions of the state.

The North Indian state of Uttarakhand has been reeling through heavy rainfall that has resulted in major landslides and rising water levels washed away bridge near Joshimath-Malari Highway. In Bageshwar a major landslide blocked traffic at NH-109 significantly affecting vehicular movement. In another incident of landslide in Chamoli district NH-7 has been closed for traffic at several places.

On Saturday,  Yamunotri Highway number 123 was blocked due to falling debris in the Pauri region of Garwhal district. As per an official in  District Disaster Management significant amount of debris accumulation near Chami has caused the highway to be closed.

The Naintal-Alomora highway in the Kumaon region has been ordered closed as a ‘Red Alert’ has been issued across the state.

‘Red Alert’

The state will receive heavy rainfall as weather conditions remains severe in the state.

For the districts of Dehradun, Haridwar, Tehri and Pauri meteorological department in Dehradun has issued a ‘Red Alert’ for the next two days. As per Vikram Singh, Director, Meteorological Department, Dehradun “There is a possibility of more rainfall in Uttarakhand on 16-17 July. For today, a red alert has been issued in Dehradun, Tehri, Pauri and Haridwar districts. There will be a slight reduction in rainfall on July 18.”

The rain will slow down gradually and a ‘Yellow alert’ has been placed for all these districts on July 19.

NDRF to rescue

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has deployed 11 units across the state to assist state authorities in carrying out rescue work in the flooded regions. On Friday, an official statement was released which said “The flood rescue operation by the National Disaster Response Force continues in the flood-affected areas of Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Uttarakhand, and Delhi, where torrential rainfall and the release of water from barrages have resulted in unprecedented floods.”

The units of NDRF are providing medical assistance and are also distributing relief material for the people whose lives has been affected by natural disaster. The NDRF control room is working in close association with concerned authorities in order to mitigate the series of natural disasters across Northern India.
