The number of trains departing from Dehradun Railway Station is continuously decreasing, following a trend since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Post-pandemic, there has been a consistent decline in the operation of trains originating from Dehradun. Last year, the Bandra Express was rerouted through Haridwar instead of Dehradun. Starting from January 3, 2024, the operation of the Indore and Ujjain Express trains will also be shifted from Dehradun to the Yog Nagari Rishikesh Railway Station.
The reduction in the number of long-distance trains from Dehradun is causing significant disappointment and concern, particularly among porters and vendors. They express their dissatisfaction, stating that the decrease in train services is adversely affecting their livelihoods. Sudhir Singh, the Senior Divisional Commercial Manager (Coaching) of Northern Railways Muradabad Division, has issued orders addressing this issue. Following the rerouting of these two trains through Yog Nagari Rishikesh, a total of 16 trains will operate from Dehradun.
Traders Anticipate Losses
Shopkeepers operating at Dehradun Station argue that a decrease in the number of trains will result in financial losses for them. Shopkeeper Subhash mentions that passengers on long-distance trains tend to purchase more goods, and it is in these trains that higher sales are observed. With the removal of these two trains from Dehradun, traders are expected to incur substantial losses.
