Uttarakhand News: A major milestone has been achieved in the ongoing Rishikesh-Karnprayag rail project in Uttarakhand, as a crucial 3-kilometer-long tunnel section between Lakshmoli and Maletha has been successfully completed. This development marks a significant step forward in the ambitious 125-kilometer-long Rishikesh-Karnprayag rail project, with approximately 105 kilometers of it designed to be inside tunnels.
On Sunday, the completion of this segment was celebrated in a ceremony attended by regional MLA Vinod Kandari, Rail Vikas Nigam officials, and employees from the executing agency, Navyuga Engineering Company. Sweets were distributed to mark the occasion.

MLA Vinod Kandari expressed satisfaction with the rapid progress of the railway project, emphasizing that the endeavor is moving ahead swiftly, increasing the likelihood of trains reaching the mountains of Uttarakhand in the near future. The goal is to have trains running in the region by 2026, making it possible to send trains into the mountainous terrain of Uttarakhand.
Currently, 60% of the tunnel construction work for the Rishikesh-Karnprayag broad-gauge rail project has been completed, with a total of 127 kilometers of tunnel work accomplished so far. Out of the 126 kilometers of this railway project, 105 kilometers will pass through tunnels, while the remaining 21 kilometers will be open-air tracks. In total, 17 tunnels are being constructed as part of this endeavor.
The project will comprise 80 entry points across 9 phases. Once the project is finalized, travel time between Rishikesh and Karnaprayag is expected to be reduced from 7 hours to just 2 hours, significantly improving connectivity in the region. The journey from Karnaprayag to Badrinath, which currently takes 4.30 hours, will be shortened to just two hours, while the travel time from Rishikesh to Badrinath will be reduced from 11 hours to four hours.
