Uttarakhand News: In a recent ruling, the Supreme Court of India criticized Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami for overriding objections to the appointment of Indian Forest Service (IFS) officer Rahul as the field director of Rajaji National Park. The objections came from the state’s forest minister and senior bureaucrats, including the principal secretary, due to an ongoing departmental inquiry and CBI investigation into allegations of tree felling in Corbett Tiger Reserve.
Repercussions and Response
In response to the Supreme Court’s intervention, IFS officer Rahul has been relieved of his duties as field director. The ruling underscores the importance of adhering to established protocols and respecting the objections of senior officials in governance decisions. This case highlights ongoing tensions between political authority and bureaucratic accountability in administrative appointments.

Justices B R Gavai, P K Mishra, and K V Vishwanathan questioned the Chief Minister’s decision-making process, noting that Dhami failed to provide reasons for disregarding the concerns of his officials. Justice Gavai emphasized that the CM’s unilateral decision contradicts the public trust doctrine, which requires accountable and transparent governance. “We are not in a feudal era where ‘Raja jaisa bole waisa chale’ (king is the final word),” Justice Gavai remarked.
Following the Supreme Court’s scrutiny, IFS officer Rahul has been relieved from his position.
