In response to the distress caused by stray dog bites, the Urban Development Directorate has issued Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Under this initiative, every municipal corporation is mandated to form an Animal Birth Control (ABC) Monitoring Committee and establish a Dog Squad to investigate and handle reports of dog bites promptly.
Stringent Measures for Stray Dog Management
As per the directives issued by Urban Development Director Nitin Bhadauria, the monitoring committee will prioritize complaints related to aggressive stray dogs. Once a complaint is received, the committee will keep records of the complainant’s name, address, phone number, along with details of the dog bite incident, including date, time, and location.
Swift Action and Monitoring Process
If the dog’s aggressive behavior is confirmed, the Dog Squad, comprising a dog van, driver, and two catchers, will apprehend the animal. The captured dog will then be placed under surveillance in the ABC campus. After a seven-day observation period, if it is determined that the dog is not aggressive and does not pose a threat, it will be released back to its original location after sterilization.
Extended Monitoring if Necessary
In cases where further observation is deemed necessary, the dog may be monitored for one to three weeks post-sterilization. This comprehensive approach aims to alleviate concerns of citizens affected by stray dog bites while ensuring humane treatment of animals. The SOPs provide a structured framework for municipalities to effectively manage the stray dog population and mitigate the risks associated with aggressive behavior.
