Uttarakhand News: A committee appointed to draft the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Uttarakhand has submitted its document to Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami. Headed by former Supreme Court judge Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai, the committee presented the UCC draft to Dhami during a program at Mukhya Sevak Sadan in Dehradun. The submission precedes a special four-day session of the Uttarakhand assembly from February 5-8, where a legislation on the UCC is expected to be passed.
Historic Move for Uttarakhand
If approved and implemented, Uttarakhand will become the first state in India post-Independence to adopt the Uniform Civil Code. The state government is set to review and approve the draft in a cabinet meeting on Saturday. Chief Minister Dhami highlighted the significance of the day, stating that the UCC aligns with the vision of “Ek Bharat, Shrestha Bharat” (One India, Best India).
Legislative Process Ahead
After the cabinet’s approval, the UCC draft is anticipated to be tabled as a bill in the Uttarakhand assembly on February 6. This legislative step marks a historic move towards the implementation of a common civil code in the state, aiming to streamline personal laws and promote uniformity in civil matters.
