Uttarakhand News: To address traffic congestion in Uttarakhand, especially during the heavy inflow of tourists and pilgrims, the state government is enhancing road infrastructure and building parking facilities at key locations. Currently, parking facilities for over 15,000 vehicles are being developed at 182 sites through various development authorities. Of these, 34 parking sites are already operational, accommodating 2,102 vehicles. The Mussoorie Dehradun Development Authority (MDDA) alone is constructing parking spaces for 2,000 vehicles in Rishikesh and Dehradun.
Focus on Timely Completion
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami emphasized the need to save visitors’ valuable time by ensuring smooth traffic flow. He directed district magistrates to prioritize land identification for parking facilities, which will also benefit local residents.
Strengthened Road Connectivity Fuels Demand
The state has witnessed enhanced connectivity due to the All-Weather Road project, expressways, and the upgradation of state highways to national highways. This has led to record-breaking crowds during the Char Dham Yatra and tourist seasons, resulting in increasing congestion at popular destinations.
Innovative Tunnel Parking Introduced
Given Uttarakhand's hilly terrain, where space for surface and multi-story parking is limited, the state government is introducing tunnel parking. This innovative solution involves creating parking facilities inside mountain tunnels at locations such as Bageshwar, Laxman Jhula, Ukhimath, Kempty Falls, Nainbagh, Tapovan, Uttarkashi, Yamunotri Road, and Nainital (at two sites).
Milestone for Urban Development
Dr. R. Meenakshi Sundaram, Chief Administrator of the Uttarakhand Housing and Urban Development Authority (UDA), described tunnel parking as a game-changer for the state, offering an efficient and sustainable solution to parking challenges in mountainous areas. Currently, 47 additional parking sites are under construction, with work on the remaining projects at various stages of progress.
