Uttarakhand Weather Update: Uttarakhand is currently on high alert as extreme weather conditions continue to cause major disruptions in the state. On Saturday, the region experienced heavy rainfall that triggered multiple landslides along the Badrinath National Highway, obstructing key points such as Lambagad, Nandprayag, Sonala, and Barrage Kunj. The alternate route between Sakot and Nandprayag has also been affected, further complicating travel in the area.
Landslides Halt Traffic
The Chamoli Police issued a statement highlighting the severity of the situation, stating, “The heavy rainfall in the district has caused landslides at numerous locations along the Badrinath National Highway, leading to frequent road blockages. We are halting travelers at safe locations to ensure their safety.” Earlier, road blockages were reported at Kameda (Gauchar), Nandprayag, and Chhinka, affecting local traffic. However, authorities have since cleared the roadblocks at Chhinka and Kameda, allowing travel to resume.
Government Response
In response to the worsening weather, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has instructed the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and District Magistrates to remain vigilant. He also urged residents to avoid non-essential travel during this period of heavy rainfall to ensure safety. The state’s emergency services are on high alert to deal with any further developments.
IMD Issues Red and Orange Alerts
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for several southern districts of Uttarakhand, warning of continued heavy rainfall, while an orange alert has been issued for other regions. According to the IMD, a depression over northwest Uttar Pradesh is expected to weaken into a low-pressure system within the next 12 hours. This weather system, centered near Bareilly, is expected to bring scattered clouds and intense convection to southern Uttarakhand and parts of Uttar Pradesh, with more moderate to intense conditions likely in northern Uttarakhand, eastern Rajasthan, and northwest Madhya Pradesh.
The situation remains fluid, and travelers are advised to stay updated on road conditions and avoid risky areas.
