Senior Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan, along with his wife Tanzin Fatima and son Abdullah Azam Khan, has been sentenced to seven years in prison by a Rampur MP-MLA court for their involvement in a fake birth certificate case.
Following the verdict, all three were taken into custody directly from the court. Former DGC (crime) Arun Saxena confirmed the sentencing, including a fine of Rs 15,000.
Security in Rampur has been heightened
To prevent any potential law and order issues, security in Rampur has been heightened. The case originated in 2019 when BJP MLA Akash Saxena filed a case against Abdullah Azam for possessing two birth certificates. Azam Khan and Tanzin Fatima were also implicated. The charges were filed under IPC Sections 420, 467, 468, and 471.
Abdullah Azam is accused of utilizing two birth certificates for his convenience. One was issued by the Lucknow municipality, while the other came from the Rampur municipality. He reportedly used the first certificate for obtaining a passport for foreign trips and the second one for government-related purposes. Both certificates were obtained through fraudulent means as part of a premeditated scheme.
Another setback for Abdullah Azam
The situation marks another setback for Abdullah Azam, who was previously disqualified as a member of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly this year due to his two-year prison sentence in a 15-year-old case. The Supreme Court recently declined to grant an interim stay on Abdullah’s conviction in that case.
Notably, both Azam Khan and Abdullah had previously been convicted in a 2019 hate speech case. They represented the Suar Assembly constituency in Rampur district before their disqualification.
