In an effort to broaden the scope of the existing Safe City project, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has directed officials to extend its coverage to encompass elderly individuals, children, and individuals with disabilities. While the project has predominantly focused on enhancing the safety of women, the Chief Minister emphasized the importance of including these vulnerable groups. The directive comes with a strong emphasis on expanding the reach of CCTV surveillance across all areas to ensure comprehensive safety measures.
Currently, the initial phase of the Safe City project involves the development of 17 municipal corporations and Gautam Budh Nagar as secure urban zones. Subsequent phases will involve linking 57 district headquarters municipalities in the second phase and 143 municipalities in the third phase to this initiative. The Chief Minister stressed the necessity of marking the entry points of these cities with distinctive signboards branding them as ‘Safe Cities’.

Mandatory installation of CCTV cameras has been proposed for various locations, including commercial establishments, government and private hospitals, educational institutions, and intersections. Additionally, police stations have been given a one-week deadline to install CCTV cameras.
During a comprehensive evaluation of the ongoing progress of the Safe City Project, the Chief Minister underscored the indispensable role of public cooperation in ensuring the triumph of this endeavor.
“The importance of CCTV in crime control should be explained to people in order to encourage them to install CCTV cameras. Although people can keep the data of their CCTV footage with themselves, it should be ensured that the footage is made available to the police when necessary,” the CM said.
9,396 potential sites for CCTV camera installation have been identified
At the review meeting, it was conveyed to the Chief Minister that, thus far, 9,396 potential sites for CCTV camera installation have been identified across cities like Agra, Aligarh, Bareilly, Jhansi, Kanpur, Lucknow, Moradabad, Prayagraj, Saharanpur, and Varanasi. Of these locations, cameras have already been set up at 3,489 spots. Furthermore, plans are in motion to select agencies for the installation of CCTV cameras at over 7,600 additional sites in cities including Ayodhya, Gorakhpur, Firozabad, Mathura-Vrindavan, Shahjahanpur, Meerut, and Ghaziabad.
