CM Yogi Adityanath : Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath arrived at the residence of BJP National President JP Nadda on Sunday evening to deliberate on the upcoming by-elections in Uttar Pradesh and other organizational matters.
They were joined by Uttar Pradesh BJP Chief Bhupendra Singh Chaudhary and UP Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak. Additional leaders, including Deputy Chief Ministers Keshav Prasad Maurya, Brijesh Pathak, and state general secretary (Organization) Dharampal Singh, are also expected to participate in the discussions.
Focus on By-Elections and BJP’s Setbacks
According to party sources, the primary agenda of the meeting will be the by-elections for 10 Assembly seats in Uttar Pradesh, which are crucial for the BJP to regain its electoral momentum in the state. However, the setbacks suffered by the BJP in the Lok Sabha polls earlier this year are also expected to be discussed. In the 2024 elections, the BJP secured only 33 seats, a significant decline from the 62 seats it won in the 2019 elections.
Opposition Gains in Lok Sabha Elections
The Samajwadi Party (SP), led by Akhilesh Yadav, emerged as a formidable opposition force in the state, winning 37 seats in the Lok Sabha polls. Additionally, the Congress, which contested in alliance with the SP as part of the INDIA bloc, won six seats. These results have prompted introspection within the BJP regarding its strategy in Uttar Pradesh.
By-Elections Crucial for BJP and Opposition
The by-elections, whose dates will be announced soon by the Election Commission, are seen as pivotal for both the BJP and opposition parties. The 10 vacant Assembly seats are in Phulpur, Khair, Ghaziabad, Majhwan, Mirapur, Milkypur, Karhal, Katehari, Kundarki, and Sisamau. For the BJP, winning these seats is crucial to restoring its electoral strength in Uttar Pradesh.
Party insiders indicate that the BJP leadership is keen to address the challenges it faces in the state and strategize to reclaim its dominance in upcoming electoral contests.
