Bahraich Encounter

Gopal Mishra: In a swift crackdown following the recent violence in Bahraich, Uttar Pradesh, where Gopal Mishra was killed during clashes, police have arrested five individuals in connection with the incident. According to Director General of Police (DGP) Prashant Kumar, two of the accused were injured in an encounter while trying to escape. The police confirmed that the situation is now under control.

Police Encounter While Recovering Weapons

The two injured, Sarfaraz and Mohammad Talib, were shot in the leg by the police while allegedly trying to flee towards Nepal. According to the police, the incident occurred when the five accused were taken to the India-Nepal border to recover weapons.

“During the weapons recovery operation, Sarfaraz and Talib attempted to run away. In response, the police opened fire, injuring them. The other three suspects – Abdul Hameed, Fahim, and Abdul Afzal – have been arrested. The situation is now under control,” DGP Prashant Kumar explained.

He assured that further updates would be provided by the Bahraich police as investigations proceed.

Opposition Criticizes Government Over Encounters

The incident has sparked sharp reactions from opposition leaders. Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav criticized the state government, accusing it of using encounters to mask its administrative failures. “This violence is the result of poor governance. Encounters won’t fix the law and order problem in the state. If the authorities can’t handle small events like processions peacefully, how can they ensure public safety?” Yadav questioned. He also expressed solidarity with the families affected by the violence, vowing to help them get justice.

Similarly, Congress leaders condemned the government’s handling of the situation. Uttar Pradesh Congress President Ajay Rai accused the administration of conducting “fake encounters” to cover up its inadequacies. Congress MP Imran Masood urged that accountability should extend to those who instigated the violence and those responsible for burning shops and harassing women during the clashes.
