Ghaziabad Renaming

Ghaziabad Renaming: Taking Note of the demand raised by Hindu groupings, Ghaziabad’s civic body introduced a proposal to rename Ghaziabad on Tuesday. The two new names suggested for renaming Ghaziabad are Harnandi Nagar and Gaj Nagar. A BJP councillor introduced the recent proposal to rename the UP district and there is a huge possibility that it will be renamed soon. Check more details below.

Proposal Passed in Municipal Corporation

In the latest development, the proposal for the renaming of the district Ghaziabad has been passed i the Municipal Corporation with a huge majority. BJP enjoys a comfortable majority in the civic body and this could be the primary reason that the proposal got passed in a rapid manner.

For the new proposal, Sunita Dayal, Major Ghaziabad mentioned that they have observed rising demand for the renaming of Ghaziabad. “But this is the first time the matter will be being discussed at the executive level,” she told TOI

Earlier also, the demands for renaming Ghaziabad had been raised by some entities and it has witnessed a growing trend over the years. Especially, the renaming of Allahabad sparked a significant rise in such demands in 2018.

The councillor of ward no. 100, Sanjay Singh formally introduced the proposal to rename Ghaziabad. He said “The board has adopted my proposal and will hold a discussion on it on Tuesday. Primarily, I have proposed two names – Gajnagar and Harnandi Nagar. Ghaziabad holds a significant place in history. It’s high time the city is accorded its rightful place,” he added.

Mahant Narayan Giri, the head priest of Dudheshwar Nath temple. In 2022, he met Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and submitted a memorandum. “The CM assured me he would look into our demands. I had suggested that Ghaziabad should be named either Gajprastha, Dudheshwarath Nagar or Harnandipuram,” Giri said.

Why to Rename?

“In Mahabharat, the area that is Ghaziabad today was once a part of Hastinapur, just 40km from here. This was a forested area and home to many wild animals like elephants. Since Gaj means elephant, the name Gajpura or Gajnagar may be apt,” Giri said.

Elephants also find mention in the UP District Gazetteers of Meerut, a government booklet of records that was last published in 1966. “Both in the Mahabharata and the works of Kalidasa, there is mention of huge and dense forests to the north of Hastinapur where it appears elephants lived in large numbers… This place is known by many other names and it is probably not a mere coincidence that they are mostly synonyms of the word meaning elephant,” reads the seventh edition of the Gazetteer. Giri said the name, Harnandi Nagar, alluded to the Hindon River, which flows past the city.
