Kanwar Yatra 2024: The Uttar Pradesh government is ready for the upcoming Kanwar Yatra. On July 22, Hindus celebrate the start of Sawan, an auspicious month of immense significance. Amidst these arrangements, a recent move by the Yogi Adityanath administration has caused political uproar. The decision states that along the Kanwar Yatra route, all vendors and store owners are required to display their names.
New Directive from the UP Government
The Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) of Uttar Pradesh announced, “UP CM Yogi Adityanath took a step for Kanwar pilgrims. ‘Nameplate’ will have to be put on the food shops on the Kanwar routes across UP. The decision was taken to maintain the purity of the faith of Kanwar pilgrims. Action will also be taken against those selling products with Halal certification.”
Vishwa Hindu Parishad’s Support
Following the issuance of this directive, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) expressed its support. A VHP spokesperson stated on Thursday, “This is necessary to protect the religious sentiments of Hindus.” Several Hindu organizations have alleged that some shopkeepers hide their true identities by changing their names, which they claim hurts the religious sentiments of Kanwar pilgrims.
Opposition Calls the Decision Unconstitutional
With the opposition calling the decision unconstitutional, it has sparked a political firestorm. The decision has been deemed unconstitutional by BSP supremo Mayawati. Calling the ruling a social crime, former chief minister Akhilesh Yadav requested the courts to take suo motu cognizance of the case. The instruction was also criticised by Ajay Rai, the president of the Uttar Pradesh Congress, who claimed that it is ineffective and encourages conflict in society.
