Meerut News: To celebrate Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary on October 2, the Meerut Municipal Corporation introduced an innovative approach. They placed a statue of Mahatma Gandhi at the Commissionerate Square’s “I Love Meerut” selfie spot, which was made using recycled materials. While the concept of creating a statue from scrap materials was commendable, the actual execution fell short, resulting in a rather unsettling and scary appearance for the statue. Unfortunately, the statue’s face of Mahatma Gandhi was scary, and it ended up creating fear.
Municipality removes ‘Mahatama Gandhi’ statue after backlash
The installation of such a statue of the Father of the Nation by the Meerut Municipal Corporation received strong public backlash. In response to the criticism, the Municipal Corporation promptly decided to remove the statue from the designated selfie spot. The statue had been widely regarded as a disrespectful portrayal of Mahatma Gandhi, as it had been poorly made, particularly with a frightening facial appearance. Consequently, people were reluctant to take selfies alongside the statue, as it adversely impacted the overall aesthetic and mood of the photos.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded the Uttar Pradesh Government, led by Yogi Adityanath, for its innovative approach to city beautification by utilizing recycled materials during one of his Mann Ki Baat broadcasts. Nevertheless, the Meerut Municipal Corporation received significant backlash for its decision to install a Mahatma Gandhi statue which turned out to be scary. This statue, installed on October 2, was later removed by authorities due to the widespread criticism it garnered.

The creation of the statue was entrusted to Dr. Prince Raj, an artist associated with the Eco India Innovation Company, and it incurred an expenditure of one lakh rupees. The Meerut Municipal Corporation had approached Dr. Prince Raj to craft a Mahatma Gandhi statue using recycled materials. This unique statue was fashioned from discarded items such as oil drums, cut scrap materials, and auto-rickshaw tires, along with the use of nut bolts.
The entire sculpting process was completed within a 15-day timeframe. Unfortunately, the resulting statue featured an unattractive and scary rendition of Mahatma Gandhi’s face, which raised concerns among the public. Initially, these concerns were disregarded by the authorities, but as criticism continued to mount, they eventually took action and removed the statue.
