The administration in Noida has initiated a campaign urging residents to report cases of individuals buying liquor from Delhi or Gurugram for consumption in Uttar Pradesh. The move aligns with the administration’s efforts to enhance revenue from liquor sales and prevent the influx of alcohol from neighboring states with lower prices.
Assurances of Anonymity for Reporting Residents
Residents reporting such instances have been assured that their identity will be kept confidential. The administration emphasized that bringing or consuming liquor from outside Uttar Pradesh is a punishable offense, and those accused could face imprisonment.
Legal Consequences for Cross-Border Alcohol Transportation
District Excise Officer Subodh Kumar highlighted the legal consequences, stating that bringing or consuming liquor from other states is a violation of the Uttar Pradesh Excise Act 1910. Offenders can be charged under Section 63, potentially leading to imprisonment, and under Section 72, the vehicle used for transporting illegal liquor can be confiscated. The state’s excise rules allow only one bottle of alcohol from other states, with a minimum penalty of ₹5,000.
