To combat anti-social elements, smuggling, and the mafia’s use of weapons in the state, Uttar Pradesh, India’s police force is adopting high-tech measures.
The Pune-based robotic start-up and the police department have a contract in place for the delivery of 84 specialist drones with thermal imaging capabilities and day and night vision so that concealed weapons and ammo may be found.
The drones would also help the Uttar Pradesh police agency regulate the riot scenario and enhance their capacity for aerial observation. Sagar Defence Engineering won the contract for less than Rs 10 lakh ($12,220.38) per drone.
The UP government had previously purchased basic drones for surveillance purposes while the state was hosting the Kumbh Mela, but this is the first time the state police had requested expert drones. One microphone and two cutting-edge cameras will be equipped on the drones so they may issue alerts, make announcements for efficient enforcement, and raise awareness.
Nikunj Parashar, the founder and MD of Sagar, said in an interview with The Times of India, “These drones that weigh around 6.5kg can operate for an hour and for a distance of 5km on a single charge. Drones of the same platform with different payloads were earlier acquired by the Indian Navy from us. The Navy uses these drones on high seas for keeping surveillance around its warships and for keeping an eye on enemy vessels, pirates, gun-runners and drug smugglers.”
According to Parashar, his business has begun producing the specialist drones and will “deliver all 84 drones to the UP police by the last week of May.”
He stated that the UP Special Task Force had purchased some drones from his company for anti-criminal activities.
