Punjab police officials are in a fix because Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann asked them to disclose the names of all the officers who helped don Mukhtar Ansari escape from jail in UP by keeping him in Ropar jail unnecessarily after filing a “flimsy” extortion case, during the former Congress regime.
In a letter dated August 5 to Anurag Verma, Principal Secretary of the Department of Home, Venu Parsad, the Principal Secretary to CM Mann, requested a detailed report regarding the retention of Mukhtar Ansari in Punjab despite the fact that more than 12 much more serious cases were pending against him in his home state of Uttar Pradesh.
Venu Parsad told indianarrative.com that the CM’s office to date did not receive any reply from the Department of Home despite three months having elapsed since the letter was sent.
Venu wrote, quoting the CM, “The office note does not provide the names of the officers/officials who are associated with the subject matter. Given this, the Director General of the Police Punjab may be asked to depute a senior level officer, not below the rank of ADGP to enquire into this matter and submit his report.”
The CM’s letter emanated based on a writ petition of 2020 titled “State of Uttar Pradesh Vs Jail Superintendent (Ropar) and others.”
In this petition filed in the Supreme Court by the Yogi Aditiya Nath-led UP government, it was prayed that the Punjab government may be directed to send Mukhtar Ansari to UP as trial and investigations into various heinous crimes committed by the gangster were pending in the state.

The UP government, led by Yogi Aditiya Nath, requested in its appeal to the Supreme Court that the Punjab government be instructed to extradite Mukhtar Ansari to the state of Uttar Pradesh because the trial and investigations into the gangster’s numerous heinous acts are ongoing there.
Ultimately, the Apex Court ordered the transfer of Ansari to UP until the conclusion of the trials for heinous crimes, despite opposition from the Punjab administration. Following this, Punjab might start his trial in the Homeland Heights extortion call case.
The UP courts had frequently issued summonses and production warrants requesting Ansari’s appearance, but the Ropar jail officers had refused to comply.
