In a significant move aimed at enhancing road safety and promoting responsible riding habits among users of two-wheelers, Rapido, a prominent bike-taxi aggregator platform in India, has partnered with the UP Police for a noteworthy initiative involving the distribution of free helmets. This effort took place near the Botanical Garden Metro Station in Noida and was designed to raise awareness about the critical importance of using certified helmets and adopting safe driving behaviors. These actions are intended to reduce the occurrence of injuries and fatalities stemming from road accidents. The campaign, led by Saurabh Srivastava, ACP Traffic of Gautam Buddh Nagar, garnered enthusiastic support from attendees and commuters.
During this event, the UP traffic police took the time to sensitize over 100 two-wheeler riders, providing them with complimentary helmets featuring the Rapido brand. This effort particularly benefited young commuters and economically disadvantaged families who often lack access to proper protective gear. The helmets distributed were certified according to ISO standards, ensuring their compliance with rigorous quality criteria. Attendees were also educated on the correct way to wear and properly fit helmets. Additionally, they received guidance on the significance of adhering to other safety measures while operating their vehicles.
Pavan Guntupalli, Co-Founder of Rapido, drew attention to the high vulnerability of two-wheeler riders on Indian roads, coupled with the alarming number of fatalities they experience. Guntupalli highlighted the major concern surrounding the negligence exhibited by riders when it comes to wearing preventive gear such as helmets. He underlined the fact that the proper use of certified helmets can significantly mitigate the severity of injuries resulting from accidents involving riders. Guntupalli expressed gratitude for the opportunity to collaborate with the UP Police-led initiative, which focuses on steering riders toward safe driving practices.
According to data provided by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), a distressing number of lives are lost each year in road accidents involving two-wheelers. Specifically, in 2021, around 70,000 riders lost their lives, accounting for a substantial 44% of the overall traffic accident fatalities. Rapido is deeply committed to addressing this critical issue and aspires to play a role in transforming the existing landscape by advocating for safe driving behaviors among riders. The ultimate goal is to make two-wheeler commuting safer and more secure across the entire nation.
