UP Bypolls 2024: The recent decision by the Election Commission to postpone the by-elections in Uttar Pradesh from November 13 to November 20 has sparked a sharp response from Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav. Taking to social media, Akhilesh Yadav took a dig at the BJP, saying, “Talenge to aur bhi bura harenge!”
Akhilesh Yadav Criticises BJP’s Tactics
Akhilesh Yadav took to X (formerly Twitter) to express his frustrations. He remarked, “If you postpone it, you will lose even worse! First, the Milkipur by-election was postponed, and now the dates for the by-elections for the remaining seats have been announced. The BJP was never so weak.” Akhilesh Yadav emphasized that the postponement was a strategic move by the BJP, driven by the “Maha-Berozgari” (mass unemployment) in Uttar Pradesh. He pointed out that many people who usually migrate to other states for work had returned to Uttar Pradesh for the Diwali and Chhath holidays and were prepared to vote against the BJP in the by-elections.
Dimple Yadav’s Take on the By-Election Delay
In a similar tone, Akhilesh Yadav’s wife, Dimple Yadav, and prominent Samajwadi Party leader also commented on the situation. Speaking to ANI, she said, “I have this information that the election date for the UP by-polls has changed. Something must have caused this shift. Now, it’s set for November 20. I believe these dates have been changed because the SP is performing well, not only in UP but also in Maharashtra, where it is contesting elections.”
Election Commission Postpones Bypolls in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Kerala
The Election Commission announced the decision to delay the bypolls from November 13 to November 20, impacting a total of 14 Assembly constituencies across Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, and Punjab. “The Commission, having considered these factors and representations, has decided to change the date of poll from November 13 (Wednesday) to November 20 (Wednesday) in 14 Assembly constituencies,” the Election Commission stated. This delay has stirred political reactions, with parties strategizing around the new polling date.
BJP Requested Postponement Due to Kartik Purnima Festivities
Earlier, the BJP submitted a memorandum to the Election Commission requesting a change in the UP bypolls date, citing the Kartik Purnima festival on November 15. The BJP delegation explained that this festival draws large gatherings in specific areas of the state, and rescheduling would allow more people to vote. Consequently, the by-elections for nine seats in Uttar Pradesh are now set for November 20. The seats include Ghaziabad Sadar, Karhal in Mainpuri, Mirapur in Muzaffarnagar, Katehari in Ambedkarnagar, Khair in Aligarh, Kundarki in Moradabad, Sisamau in Kanpur, Phulpur in Prayagraj, and Majhawan in Mirzapur.
