A 29-year-old trans woman hired as a teacher by a private school in Uttar Pradesh’s Lakhimpur Kheri district was allegedly asked to resign after revealing her gender to some school members and students. The school management has denied the allegations and said that the woman was fired because she was not good at teaching one of the subjects for which she was assigned. The woman alleged that she was hired as an English and social science teacher and was asked to keep her gender identity a secret by the school management after seeing her documents.
Asked to resign only a week after appointment
“After a rigorous three-stage interview, I was appointed by the school and given the post of a Trained Graduate Teacher (TGT) for Social Science and English on November 22,” the woman said. She said that she was asked to resign only a week later because she did not comply with the instructions to identify herself.
The woman said, “Because of my physical features which are unlike other women, I was subjected to trolling in the school by some staff and studentsI often used to get undue attention from people for my looks and I used to get laughed at and called ‘Hijra’. Then I tried to educate and sensitize the students about the community and the laws being made for such people, while also telling them that I represent that community.”
She further said, “This was unacceptable to the school administration and I was asked to resign on December 2, just 10 days after I was hired, on the grounds that I was not competent enough to teach social science.’ The woman, who was born as a male, underwent a male-to-female sex reassignment surgery in 2019 at the Bhandari Hospital and Research Center in Indore.
According to her, she is a good teacher and her skills were acknowledged by the students and the school principal. However, when the school came to know about her identity, not only was she forced to resign, but they were also reluctant to give her a relieving letter.
Took help from Women’s Commission
The woman said, “Then I called the Delhi Commission for Women on 181 for help and they advised me to file a complaint with the local police. The DCW also sent the local police to the school, after which I received my relieving letter on December 3.”
