UP Bypolls 2024: The by-election battle for nine assembly seats in Uttar Pradesh has turned intense, with fierce competition between the ruling BJP and the Samajwadi Party (SP). As voters head to the polls, allegations of voter intimidation and police misconduct have stirred heated debates. SP Supremo Akhilesh Yadav has taken to social media to highlight incidents, demanding accountability and swift action from the Election Commission.
Voting Disrupted: Women Confront Police in Mirapur
One of the most shocking incidents from the UP Bypoll Election 2024 unfolded in Meerapur, Muzaffarnagar. A video shared by Akhilesh Yadav captured women voters engaged in a heated exchange with police officers in Kakrouli during polling. In the footage, an officer was seen wielding a revolver, which escalated tensions on the ground.
Tagging the Election Commission, Akhilesh Yadav wrote, “Election Commission should immediately suspend SHO of Kakrouli police station area of Meerapur because he is stopping voters from casting their votes by threatening them with a revolver.” The video quickly went viral, with many questioning the role of the police during elections.
Allegations of Harassment – Women Prevented from Voting
In another video shared by Akhilesh Yadav, women voters in Ibrahimpur alleged harassment by police officials. According to the SP leader, these officers were deliberately obstructing women from casting their votes. Yadav described the incidents as a direct attack on the democratic rights of citizens and reiterated his demand for strict action.
Election Commission’s Swift Response
The Election Commission (EC) acted promptly on the complaints, taking disciplinary action against police personnel implicated in these incidents. So far, seven police officers have been suspended, including:
- Three officers from Kundarki in Moradabad,
- Two officers from Mirapur in Muzaffarnagar,
- Two officers from Sisamau in Kanpur.
The swift suspension of these officers highlights the EC’s commitment to maintaining fairness and order during the bypolls. However, opposition leaders, including Yadav, continue to press for more accountability.
