As of now, Lucknow, Varanasi, and Kushinagar airports facilitate both international and domestic flights, while Gorakhpur, Agra, Prayagraj, Kanpur, Hindon, and Bareilly operate exclusively for domestic flights.
The DGCA is expected to assess the infrastructure of Aligarh, Chitrakoot, and Shravasti airports by December 30, with the possibility of granting them commercial flight operation licenses as well. These airports are equipped with a 1,500m-long runway and a terminal capable of handling passenger arrivals and departures for smaller aircraft.
Earlier, on December 14, the DGCA issued a license for commercial operations at Ayodhya airport, designed to accommodate up to eight Airbus 320 or Boeing 737 Max series single-aisle 200-seater aircraft. The Ayodhya airport is operational day and night, with weather capabilities, boasting a total passenger handling capacity of 500 at a time. The airport features a 2,200m-long and 45m-wide runway, along with an 8,000 sqm terminal. Plans for the second phase include extending the runway to 3,125m for international operations and constructing a second terminal over a 30,000 sqm area.
