In a significant move, approximately 50 lakh primary students enrolled in classes 1 and 2 in Uttar Pradesh government schools are slated to shift to National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) textbooks from the upcoming academic session in 2024-25, commencing in April.
Director General of School Education, Kanchan Verma, announced the decision, stating that the recent approval from the state cabinet would bring about a change in the books used for classes 1 and 2. The new textbooks will adhere to the NCERT pattern while being tailored to incorporate information about Uttar Pradesh. Previously, State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) books were in use, and the transition is now well-prepared.
Customized Books Reflecting UP’s Culture and Dialects
To meet the specific needs of students, the new books will not only follow the NCERT pattern but also include content relevant to Uttar Pradesh, encompassing its unique characteristics and dialects. Pawan Sachan, Joint Director at SCERT, affirmed that the customized books for classes 1 and 2 would be distributed to students starting from the academic session of 2024-25.
Postponement of Implementation Aligns with National Education Policy (NEP) Provisions
Initially planned for the academic session of 2023-24 in alignment with the provisions of the National Education Policy (2020), the introduction of NCERT-based textbooks has been postponed by a year. The decision aims to allow sufficient time for adapting to the new curriculum and ensuring students are well-acquainted with the nuances of the Hindi heartland state.
The senior official from the state basic education department confirmed that the introduction of the new NCERT-based textbooks is scheduled to commence from the academic session of 2024-25, beginning with students in classes 1 and 2.
