The Uttar Pradesh government, led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, is set to introduce the Uttar Pradesh Public Examinations Ordinance 2024 following recent paper leaks in major recruitment exams. The state cabinet has approved the proposal, which includes severe penalties such as life imprisonment and fines up to ₹1 crore for individuals found guilty of exam malpractice.
Background of the Issue
In February, question papers for the UP Police’s largest recruitment exam for 60,244 constable posts were leaked. Subsequently, in March, the Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission (UPPSC) preliminary recruitment examination for review officers and assistant review officers (ROs/AROs) was cancelled due to similar leaks.
Key Provisions of the Ordinance
The ordinance aims to address public service recruitment exams, promotion exams, and entrance tests for degrees, diplomas, and certificates. It will criminalize distributing fake question papers and creating counterfeit employment websites. Offenders could face imprisonment ranging from two years to life and fines up to ₹1 crore.
The government’s statement emphasizes that these measures are crucial to maintaining the integrity of the examination process and ensuring fair opportunities for all candidates.
