Uttar Pradesh: Akhilesh Yadav, a former chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, today disassociated himself from Rahul Gandhi’s “Bharat Jodo Yatra,” lessening the likelihood that the Congress march will serve as a potential spark for Opposition unity.

BJP and Congress are the same says Akhilesh Yadav
“Our party has a different ideology. The BJP and Congress are the same,” the head of the Samajwadi Party stated.
He was asked if he had received an invitation for the Yatra, which is now taking a break and would resume on January 3 when it enters UP from Delhi.
Akhilesh Yadav pleaded with reporters, “If you have an invitation on your phone, please, send it to me.”
He continued, “Our sentiments are with their yatra, I have received no invitation.”
Akhilesh Yadav, whose party is the largest opposition force in Uttar Pradesh, and BSP leader Mayawati, according to sources in the Congress, were both offered invitations. Neither of them, nor SP’s ally Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD), led by Jayant Chaudhary, are expected to join, according to NDTV.
Ghanshyam Tiwari, a spokesperson for SP, stated that his party supports the concept of the Bharat Jodo Yatra but added that it did not want to fuel rumours of a potential coalition.
The Congress and SP have worked together on important occasions in the past and also experienced painful splits – from battling together as recently as the 2017 UP elections to the historic incident in 2008 when the SP saved Manmohan Singh’s UPA government from collapsing.

BJP government in UP faces the major opposition from the SP
Currently, Yogi Adityanath’s BJP government in UP faces the major opposition from the SP, while the Congress has only two seats in the assembly and may require a partner to have any impact in the 2024 mega-battle against PM Narendra Modi.
Despite this, Akhilesh Yadav is apprehensive because to the failure their partnership experienced in 2017. In contrast, Samajwadi Party fared significantly better in this year’s elections without the partnership.
In recent speeches, Mayawati, whose party’s support is rapidly eroding in the state she recently ruled, has been vehemently critical of the Congress. Before the UP elections in 2022, she had warned that voting for the Congress might cause an unnecessary division in anti-BJP voters. Thus, it is not surprising that she chose not to participate in Rahul Gandhi’s march; however, the Congress’ invitation to her is a sign that it wants to unite the party against the BJP.
