Uttar Pradesh: The Congress on Saturday named former BSP MP and Dalit activist Brijlal Khabri as its president for Uttar Pradesh, months after suffering a humiliating defeat in the assembly elections.
Khabri left the Bahujan Samaj Party in 2016 on the grounds that tickets were being sold for cash, and he afterwards joined the Congress.

Congressman Ajay Kumar Lallu resigned from his position as head of the UP Congress in March of this year after his party suffered a humiliating loss in the 2022 Assembly elections by taking home just two of the 403 seats up for election. Even Priyanka Vadra Gandhi’s active campaign and her choice to provide 40% of the available tickets to women in UP failed to draw in the general public.
The Congress only won one seat in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, and that seat belonged to party president Sonia Gandhi (Rae Barelli). Smriti Irani, a senior BJP leader and Union Minister from the Congress stronghold Amethi, defeated her son and former Congress president Rahul Gandhi.
