Uttar Pradesh CM Aidtyanath renames Noida road after Ramnath Goenka

Advocating for media freedom, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Sunday recalled June 25, 1975, as a “black day” in the history of Indian democracy when the Indira Gandhi-led central government imposed a nationwide emergency. Adityanath was addressing a function at the office of The Indian Express after a prominent road in Noida was officially renamed as ‘Ramnath Goenka Marg’ after the founder.

This road was earlier known as Amaltash Road

Earlier known as Amaltash Road, this busy road connects Rajnigandha Chowk in Sector 16 of Noida to Sector 12 and the office of ‘Indian Express’ is located on this road. Adityanath also remembered and paid tribute to those who worked to restore democracy during the Emergency that lasted till 1977. Adityanath said, “The day of June 25, 1975 is known as a black day in the history of Indian democracy. But during that time India had seen the struggle and sacrifice of those people who put everything at stake to save democracy and media freedom. He showed the will to go to any extent to fight for democracy.

“This is an important day from the point of view of saving democracy”

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said, ‘Today is an emotional day for me, it is an important day from the point of view of saving democracy, I do not consider it a coincidence that this road had to be named after Ramnath Goenka on June 25 itself.’ 48 years have passed.” He recalled Goenka’s contribution to the fight for media freedom and democracy during the Emergency. Goenka was born in 1904 and died in 1991.

He said, “Today it is a matter of pride for me that I got the opportunity to inaugurate this road named after him in Noida, which is called the financial capital of Uttar Pradesh. On this occasion, I pay humble tribute to all the fighters of democracy including Goenka, who fought for democracy in this country. He said, ‘Ramnath Goenka ji is a shining pole star of the media world. Whenever there is talk of media freedom and democracy, the name of Ramnath Goenka ji will always be remembered with reverence and respect.
