Aligarh: Late last night, a heated confrontation between two student groups at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) escalated to gunfire within the university’s V.M. Hall hostel. This incident caused alarm throughout the campus, leading to three people sustaining gunshot injuries, including a homoeopathic doctor who was coincidentally present in the hostel at the time. Some of these injuries were severe.
Police launches probe
The incident took place at approximately 11 PM when a group of students was gathered outside the hostel premises. At this point, students from one faction arrived and started gunfire, leading to a fearful situation and tense environment. After the gunfire, the accused left the area. In the aftermath, students from the opposing faction, met at S.S. North Hall for a discussion. Unfortunately, tensions escalated, culminating in another round of gunfire, resulting in injuries to three. These injured individuals have been admitted to the medical college for medical treatment.
As per Inspector Vijay Singh, one of the injured individuals in the incident is Dr. Sadiq Ali from Moradabad, who is pursuing a BMC degree at ACN College and had come to AMU for specific tasks. Additionally, Firoz Alam, a resident of Dharra, and Abdullah, a resident of Purani Chungi, sustained injuries as well. All of them have been admitted to JN Medical College for treatment. The motives behind the gunfire are currently under investigation, and authorities are closely examining CCTV camera footage as part of their inquiry.
Rise in similar incidents at AMU
Last month, another incident resembling this one occurred when a shooting incident took place at Aligarh Muslim University’s Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College. This incident stemmed from a monetary transaction dispute.
Circle Officer Civil Line-Aligarh Ashok Kumar had stated, “The incident of firing came to light in Aligarh’s Police Station Civil Line area last night around 10 pm. The incident took place after a dispute escalated over a money transaction in the canteen.”
