Tensions flared in central Maharashtra as Maratha outfits organized a bandh (shutdown) to protest against police lathi charges on activists demanding reservations for the Maratha community. The protests turned violent, resulting in injuries to over 50 people, including police officers. In response, protesters torched public transport buses and vehicles, blockaded highways, and called for a bandh in seven districts.
Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar visited injured villagers at Ambad Government Hospital and extended his support to the Maratha community’s reservation demand. He emphasized the importance of peaceful protests in pursuing their cause.
Coordination meetings are being held to decide the next steps
The incident prompted political backlash, with the opposition criticizing the state government, which has ordered a probe into the matter. Coordination meetings are being held to decide the next steps in the protest by the Sakal Maratha Samaj, the community’s umbrella organization.
The violence and protests highlight the ongoing tensions surrounding the Maratha reservation issue in Maharashtra.
