Vrindavan temple corridor: Priests, traders, and local residents intensified their protest on Tuesday against the construction of a proposed corridor around the Banke Bihari temple in Vrindavan. They burnt copies of the proposed designs of the project as a mark of protest.
The protesters also wrote 108 letters with blood and sent it to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. The requested the two to shelve the project and save the heritage of Vrindavan.
Markets near temple closed
In protest, the markets near the Banke Bihari temple were closed in the second half of Tuesday for the third consecutive day. The President of Banke Bihari Vyapaari Association, Amit Gautam, said that 108 letters written with blood were sent to the PM and the CM. It requesting them to save the heritage of Vrindavan. “On one hand, we are seeking redressal from the apex court and on other, the agitation is being intensified,” Amit Gautam said.
Residents fear losing home
An 85-year-old protester, Shakuntala Devi Goswami, said, “The construction of a corridor will not only ruin the heritage of Vrindavan but we will also become homeless.”
Congress leader Pradeep Mathur said the party will not remain a mute spectator to people’s sufferings. About 300 families will become homeless and thousands of traders and others will be jobless because of this project. This is not in the interest of the residents of Vrindavan, Mathur said.
The protesters said that the protest against the corridor began on January 12. The corridor is being built on the lines of the Kashi Vishwanath Temple Corridor project in Varanasi,
The Supreme Court will hear the matter on January 23, said the protesters.
Last year the government had constituted a committee to probe the stampede in which two devotees died and half a dozen sustained injuries during Janmashtami celebrations at the temple.
On December 20, 2022, the High Court had ordered the district administration to submit a development plan of the corridor with estimated costs. A survey for the construction of the corridor had begun on January 3.
