West Bengal: Repolling announced in over 600 booths one day after violence

Repolling has been ordered in over 600 districts.

West Bengal Panchayat Elections: In West Bengal Saturday was widespread violence in wake of polling day to Panchayat Elections 2023. The run up to elections had many instances of violence in which many people got killed. Many victims of the violence were often associated with major political parties. The State Election Commission has announced repolling across 604 booths because of incidents of vandalism of ballot boxes. State Election Commissioner Rajiv Sinha has announced that repolling will be conducted on July 11 Monday. The SEC has also asked District magistrates to send detailed reports of violence and deaths.

Repolling in multiple districts

In Murshidabad alone re-polling will be held at 175 booths. The most numbers of violent incidnets had occurred in Murshidabad alone.  As many as 89 booths will go for repoll in Nadia district and 46 booths will go for repoll in North 24 Parganas district. 31 booths in East Midnapore district and 29 booths in Hooghly district will have repolling. In Malda district polling will be done in 112 pools while in South 24 Paragans, re-polling will take place at 36 booths. There will be repoll in 42 booths in North Dinajpur district and 54 booths in Cooch Behar district.

Violence in Panchayat Elections

The state suffered through extensive instances of violence on Saturday leading to announcement of repolls. 19 people are killed in violence during panchayat polling in the state. Bengal Governor Ananda Bose has flown to Delhi in order to submit a report on poll violence to Union Home Minister Amit Shah. During the election day state governor visited many places struck by political violence, mostly in North 24 Parganas district. The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has claimed nine of its members were killed died in the violence. Congress says that three of its supporters died while BJP has claimed death of two of its supporters.
