West Bengal’s Shocking Baby Sale; Couple Trades Infant for New Phone and Honeymoon

West Bengal: A couple has been detained by police in the North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal for reportedly selling their eight-month-old child. The locals were the ones who became suspicious when they saw the pair using a brand-new phone and called the police. Locals claim that the couple, who also have a daughter, toured around the state and made many stops, including at the beaches of the Mandarmani and Digha seas, for their honeymoon. The incident happened at least one and a half months ago even though it was just discovered on Sunday (July 24). The infant has been saved, and the couple, known as Jaydev Ghosh and Sathi, are currently being held by authorities. “Jaydev Ghosh and Sathi sold their baby for Rs 2 lakh. Later, they visited many places, like Digha sea beach for their honeymoon with the money. They even bought a mobile phone,” Laxmi Kundu, a neighbour told India Today.

Accusations Point to Baby Sale for Drugs

She even claimed that Sathi would invite additional guests to her home and that the couple had sold the child in order to purchase ganja and opium. Another lady, Priyanka Ghosh, who the couple is accused of selling the child to, has also been detained by police. Although she has not yet provided information, Priyanka was escorted to the Khardah police station. Kamai Chowdhury, Jaydev’s father, told India Today, “I knew that the baby had been sent to his maternal uncle’s house. Later, I came to know that the baby had been sold off. I can’t say why and to whom the baby was sold. I came to know after selling the baby, my son and his wife went to Digha, Mandarmani sea beaches. They also visited Tarapeeth Kali temple.”

Family Files Complaint of Abuse Against Son and Daughter-in-Law

A complaint was made after Kamai Chowdhury claimed that his son and daughter-in-law had physically and mentally abused him. Meanwhile, Tarok Guha, a TMC councillor, told India Today, “Even last night, Jaydeb was drunk and was shouting to take his daughter. I can’t say where she was being taken. I then rushed to his house and rebuked him. Now I have heard that his small baby has been sold. It is true the said boy has not been seen for a couple of days.”
